CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Ace? Anything more on finding those escaped convicts?” asked Luke.

“No, nothing yet. They’ve got everyone looking, including the national guard, now. Looks like they killed two park rangers and a guy that was camping alone. His body was unrecognizable when they found him. These are sick fucks.”

“How in the hell do we always seem to step into this shit?” frowned Eric. “I mean, we’re good people. We do good deeds. Why are we constantly put in the middle of this?”

“You wonder why?” asked Gaspar, leaning against the doorframe. Ian, Nine, and Ghost were standing behind him. They stepped into the room, taking a seat at the table. Nine stared at his son as Gaspar looked at Luke.

“Yea, I wonder why,” said Eric. “Are we subconsciously seeking this shit out? How the fuck does this happen?”

“We’ve asked that same question, time and time again,” said Ian. “Terrorists, murderers, rapists, pedophiles. Somehow, they all end up at our doorstep. A long time ago, the four of us sat down and asked ourselves whether or not we should continue this.”

“You obviously decided you would,” said Cam.

“Actually, our wives, your mothers, decided we would,” said Ghost. The three younger men looked at one another, Ace, Hiro, and Code turning to stare at the men. “You see, they all knew that if there had not been an us, there wouldn’t be you. They most likely wouldn’t have survived, and we wouldn’t have fallen in love and had our children. I think it was Alexandra that said, if you don’t keep doing this, we will.”

“She damn sure did,” growled Gaspar. “I wanted to lock her up for a year. But she was right. We all have this notion that we’re saving these women. We’re the ultimate rescuers, but the truth is, they saved all of us. Luke? You and Ajei have known one another since you were just little kids, but she made you a better man. Cam? I love you like a son, but you were definitely a man-whore, motherfucker.”

The men all laughed. Even his father grinned at him.

“I wish I could argue with that, but I can’t,” said Cam. Ghost nodded, continuing.

“No, you can’t. But Kate changed you. You decided that she was the only woman you ever wanted and when Will was dropped into your lap, and you had no clue if he was yours or not, you still took responsibility. We were all so proud of you. Finding out he was really yours didn’t change anything. You were there for him but, more importantly, for Kate. She changed you.

“Just like Sophia Ann changed Eric. You thought you’d have to be a monk your entire life because of that big dick of yours,” grinned Ghost. “That girl knew your secret and loved you all the more for it. It was admirable and, in many ways, showed what kind of man you were. Kind, caring, and always thinking of others.

“When you helped those children, it didn’t matter to her that you might go to prison.
